View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Twin Pines was a lookout nine miles south of Hood River, in Hood River County, Oregon.1,2 The register and firelookout.com both name the Oregon Department of Forestry as the agency.2,1 Forest Lookouts lists the site under the Mt Hood National Forest instead, so the sources disagree about who ran it.3

In 1931 a tent camp equipped with a phone occupied the site.2 The register dates the replacement of that camp, a wooden tower with a log cabin, to 1934.2 firelookout.com gives 1933 instead, for a 20-foot wooden L-4 tower with a log cabin.1 A photo captioned 1933 and a panorama dated November 10, 1933 suggest a lookout stood on the site by then, which fits firelookout.com's date better than the register's.2,3

The register says it was no longer there by 1945.2 firelookout.com dates its removal to the 1950s.1 A photo on the register page is captioned 1944, which places the lookout on the site that year.2 Forest Lookouts marks it as removed, with no date.3

No source I read describes what remains on the site today, or whether the public can reach it.2,1,3
