View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

In July 1932 the Roseburg News-Review reported that nine new lookout houses were to be built at an estimated cost of $5,300, and that one would go at Umpqua Hot Springs in the upper meadows district.1 The Forest Lookouts timeline records a 14 x 14 L-4 ground cabin constructed there that year.1,2

A July 28, 1942 item in the same paper named Alan Knudtson, son of a local jeweler, as that summer's ranger on the lookout.1

Firelookout.com gives the abandonment as 1965 and calls the site gone.2 The Oregon lookout list also marks it as a ground lookout that is gone.3 The Forest Lookouts page ends with a single bare word, "Removed," with no date or method attached.1

No source we read describes what remains at the site today, or whether the spot is open to visitors.1,2,3
