View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Forest Service put a fire lookout on Vulcan Peak in the Siskiyou National Forest in 1941.1,2,3 A May 1940 guard placement plan described the spot as looking west over country where people had started many fires.3 The cabin was a 14-by-14-foot L-4 built on the ground.3,4
In its first season the lookout was staffed for 100 days, and the observer reported to the Gold Beach station by radio.3 A 1964 item, dated July 1 and quoted by the Forest Lookouts history, said the lookout was manned that year.3 The same history places the site on the boundary of the Kalmiopsis Wild Area and calls it the farthest-flung station on the Chetco District.3
The cabin came down in 1968.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites Register says it was removed, while firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.1,2 Oregon Hikers gives only a 1960s date for the removal.4
No source describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today. Oregon Hikers lists a hike to what it calls an old lookout site, and it places the peak in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness.4 The same page says the Biscuit Fire of 2002 burned the summit hard.4 A 2021 forum thread on that page is titled as saying the lake and peak are completely unaccessible. The thread is unverified, so check conditions before any visit.4
