View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Watson Butte rises to 5,687 feet in the Umpqua National Forest, in Douglas County, Oregon.1 The register places a rag camp on the butte's western summit in 1934, and a telephone line reached the summit in 1920.1,2 That camp gave way to an L-4 ground cab in 1937.1

Sources disagree on when the lookout began. A Forest Lookouts listing gives 1933 as the year a lookout was established, and the Roaming Civic says the Forest Service dates the building to 1934, while other sources say 1937.3,2

A 1962 News-Review item, quoted on the Forest Lookouts page, names a local team member.3 According to the Roaming Civic, no one has actively staffed the lookout since the 1960s.2 The same post notes that salvaging the cab for the rental program was discussed once but never carried out.2

The Former Fire Lookout Sites register dates the collapse to the winter of 2021-22.1 The Roaming Civic cites Facebook for the last record of the cab standing, on May 24, 2021, and thinks snow most likely brought it down that winter.2 A Forest Lookouts page gives only weather as the cause.3

On its visit on July 2, 2022, the Roaming Civic found only a heap of boards on the summit.2 The trip report puts the hike from the trailhead at about 1.1 miles and describes the drive in as hard to follow, with poorly marked roads.2

A notice at the top of that 2022 report says the area was closed as of July 20, 2024, because of the active Diamond Complex.2 The 2022 report is the most recent description of the site we found, and no later status turned up after that notice.2
