View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Westfir lookout was a non-standard L-4 cab on the Willamette National Forest in Lane County, at an elevation of 1,360 feet.1 The register gives its coordinates as 43.751421 north and 122.504413 west.1 Firelookout.com places the cab one mile west of Oakridge.2

Both sources date the cab to the 1930s.1,2 They also put its end in the 1950s, but they describe the ending differently. The register says the cab was removed, while FireLookout.com says it was destroyed.1,2

The register added the site on May 16, 2011.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list marks it as gone and records its type as ground.3

None of the cited sources describes what, if anything, remains at the site now. Visitors should ask the Willamette National Forest about the site before going.
