View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Wolf Camp Butte lookout was a wooden L-4 tower built in the 1930s, overlooking the Salmon River in Clackamas County, Oregon.1 The register places it in the Mount Hood National Forest.1 A photograph in the register is captioned 1940.1

The register says the tower was removed in 1955.1 firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.2 The Oregon Lookouts page lists it only as removed, with no date.3 The sources do not agree on how the tower ended, so the story keeps both descriptions.

The Former Fire Lookout Sites register added the site on September 21, 2010, with Ray Kresek as nominator.1

PeakVisor places the summit inside the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness of the Mount Hood National Forest.4 We found no source that describes what, if anything, is left at the summit now, or whether the public can reach it.
