View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The state put a steel fire-observation tower on Big Knob in Perry County in 1921, and by October 4 a notice described it as standing.1,2 An October 1921 notice said it stood in Jackson Township, between the Tuscarora and Conococheague mountains, and was one of fifty similar towers that the forestry department had erected statewide in about three months.2
The newspapers disagreed on its height.2 An October 4 notice gave 70 feet, and an October 19 notice gave 60 feet.2 The register gives 1921 as the build year and 1994 as the removal year for a steel Aermotor tower.1
An October 19 notice named J. E. Odell of New Germantown as the observer, and said his fall fire-season duty began on October 1.2 A cabin measuring 10 by 12 feet was set at the foot of the tower for the towerman.2
The mountain was also used for other work.2 In February 1932 the Weather Bureau set up an air weather station on Big Knob near Blain, and the notice put the mountain at 2,200 feet.2 In January 1936 the towerman, Frank Nethkin, spent ten days snowbound at his mountaintop cabin, and an army plane dropped food to him.2 A February notice said a state fish warden, who reached him on snowshoes, was the first person Nethkin had seen in 38 days.2
The register says the tower was removed in 1994.1 No source I found says what remains at the site today. A 2016 state forest plan describes a vista reached by a path from Kansas Valley Road, a short distance below the Big Knob Tower site.3 An August 2024 social media post showed a small cabin beside the old Big Knob fire tower, but it did not say whether any of the tower remains.4
An OpenStreetMap point is labelled Blue Knob Lookout Tower, while the register and the 1921 notices say Big Knob.5,1,2
