View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Boone Mountain lookout was a steel Aermotor tower, built in 1921.1 The register gives the site's elevation as 1,895 feet (578 meters).1 The register places the tower in Elk County, but the Eastern US Lookouts page puts it in Clearfield County, so the sources disagree on the county.1,2

Before the tower went up, the spot had a bare observation point.2 The Eastern US Lookouts page cites a Department of Forestry report dated December 31, 1917, for that.2

The register says the tower was removed in 1974.1 Henry Isenberg nominated the site, and the register listed it on September 16, 2008.1

Nothing I read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether visitors can reach it.
