View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Dancing Ridge sits in Monroe County, in what the regional lookout listing places within Delaware State Forest.1 The steel tower that once stood there came from another site.2,3 The Snow Hill lookout, also in Monroe County, first had a tower on a building, then a wooden one, and finally a steel one.3 In 1935 that steel tower was relocated and given the name Dancing Ridge.3

The Dancing Ridge register describes the same Blaw-Knox steel tower as built in 1935 and brought from Snow Hill.2 The two registers agree that the tower moved, but they do not agree on what 1935 marks, and the sources we read do not settle it.2,3

Both listings also carry an unimproved bald-top observation point under the Dancing Ridge name. The regional listing says it was established before 1918,1 and the statewide list gives circa 1917 as its years of use.4 Neither list says whether that point is the same place as this site, so we have not linked it to the steel tower.

The tower was removed in 1975, according to both the Dancing Ridge register and the statewide list.2,4 The register also carries a photograph credited to Pete Carron and captioned "Tower remains in 2000." It does not explain what that photograph shows.2

Today, the most detailed account we found is a survey enthusiast's page about the summit's survey marker. It reports that the marker turned up destroyed on June 17, 2004.5 The writers describe four concrete footings for the tower's legs and possibly a platform at the foot of the stairs, but no standing tower.5 No source says whether the site is open to visitors or how to reach it.
