View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Pennsylvania Department of Forestry put up a steel fire tower on Elk Hill, in Susquehanna County, in 1921.1,2 A Montrose newspaper item from November 1921, quoted on the Forest Lookouts page, said the tower stood 60 feet high.2 It gave a view wide enough to spot woodland fires early.2 The item noted that the tower could not cover the whole county.2

The Former Fire Lookout Sites Register describes it as a steel Aermotor tower, built in 1921 and removed before 1989.1 The register dates its entry to September 16, 2008.1

The survey page says the benchmark at the tower site was recovered on October 12, 2008, in a destroyed state. It says several concrete supports and a concrete step still remained.3 The page says the concrete slab holding the mark formed the footing of the stairway up the lookout.3 The survey page lists the setting as a fire lookout tower.3

The survey mark carries the name Elk Mountain.3 The sources we read do not say whether visitors may reach the site.3
