View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Holmes Hurst tower was a steel Aermotor fire tower put up on Holmes Hill, between Leolyn and Shunk, in Lycoming County.1,2 A newspaper item from August 1921 says the forestry department's new tower had just been hauled by truck to its site.2

An April 1922 item named M.E. McNett, of Leolyn, as towerman on Holmes Hill.2 An October 1937 item said the tower near Masten would be taken down after the fall season, while a new one was going up nearby, on higher ground at Sprout Point.2

The register says the tower was moved in 1938 and renamed Sprout Point.1 The 1937 item and the register differ by about a year, and we have used the register's 1938 date for the move.1,2 The Sprout Point entry gives 1938 as the build year of that structure, says it came from Holmes Hurst, and gives 1985 as its removal year.3

Forest Lookouts places Sprout Point in Lycoming County's state forest, which that page spells Tiadachton.4 We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains at either the Holmes Hill or the Sprout Point site today, or whether visitors can reach them.
