View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Humboldt tower stood in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, according to the register.1 The register describes it as a steel Aermotor tower, built in 1921.1

The Forest Lookouts page holds most of what we found about its early years. An April 1923 newspaper item reports the death of a fourteen-year-old boy who had been battling a blaze near the tower.2 That item places the fire near Shellton, in Schuylkill County, which does not match the Luzerne County listing.2 The sources do not settle the point.1,2

In 1924 state foresters were trying to identify whoever was keeping dogs in the tower. Twice, dogs had been found in its cabin along with food and water.2

In 1937 a newspaper reported that Peter Polega, who had received an amateur radio license, was posted to the Humboldt tower as a lookout for forest fires.2

The Forest Lookouts page says the tower was removed in 1966.2 The register says it was removed before 2005, which fits that date.1 We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the land is open to visitors.
