View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

From an approximate location

This view, and what it could see, are worked out from Snow Hill, where the map places the lookout, not from a recorded site. The real view may differ.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Snow Hill was a lookout in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.1,2 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register gives its registry numbers as US 488 and PA 317.1

The register says the site's first tower stood on a building.1 A wooden tower came next, and then a steel one.1 In 1935 the steel tower was relocated and given the name Dancing Ridge.1

A separate register entry for Dancing Ridge describes a steel Blaw-Knox tower that came from Snow Hill and was taken down in 1975, and it dates the tower's construction to 1935.3 We read the 1935 date as the year the tower moved, although that entry uses the word "constructed."1,3 The same entry carries a photo caption that refers to tower remains in 2000, which does not sit easily with the 1975 removal date.3

A 2004 visit report, posted on a survey-marker site, found no tower standing at Dancing Ridge. It found only concrete footings and what may have been a platform at the base of the stairs.4 That report concerns Dancing Ridge, not the Snow Hill site.4

We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains at the Snow Hill site today, or whether the public may visit it.1,3
