Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Snow Shoe fire tower stands in Centre County, Pennsylvania, in and around the borough that shares its name.1 The first tower on the site was a 60-foot Aermotor erected in 1921.1,2 A 1926 newspaper report, quoted on the same lookout history page, put the tower at about 2,000 feet and said it sat practically within the borough limits.1

In 1977 a debris fire got out of control around the tower and forced the operator out of it to avoid the smoke.1 I found no record of who staffed the tower in other years, or for how long.

The current tower is a newer structure. The register says it was built around 2018 as part of Pennsylvania's program to modernize its fire tower fleet, and that it replaced the 60-foot Aermotor.2 A 2018 Pennsylvania chapter report from the Forest Fire Lookout Association says the Commonwealth is replacing many of its older towers with new structures, a job to be done in several phases over several years.3 The 1921 and 2018 dates do not truly conflict, since they belong to different structures on the same site.2,1

The register lists the tower as US 1255, PA 24, registered on December 6, 2017, and administered by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry.2 I did not find a source that says whether the tower is staffed today or open to visitors, so check with the Bureau before planning a visit.

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 2018
    • Fire Towers of Pennsylvania (ArcGIS StoryMap, Shawn Lesitsky): 1921

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
