Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Bull Island Lookout is a 110-foot Aermotor steel tower with a 7-by-7-foot glass-enclosed cab. It stands on Bull Island in Charleston County, South Carolina, inside the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.1,2 The register gives 1932 as the build year, but its description says the Bureau of Biological Survey built the tower circa 1932 to 1934, and calls it the tallest lookout in the state.1
The register's island history says Gayer Dominick bought the island in 1925 and transferred it to the government in 1936.1 The register does not explain how a federal bureau came to build on the island before then, so that question is still open.
I found no staffing history or notable fires for the tower in the sources I could reach.
The register describes the tower in the present tense, which suggests it still stands. I found no record of a fire, a move or an abandonment.1 The register records its registration on November 17, 2009.1 It lists the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as administrator, with the refuge as a cooperator.1
Most of the refuge is reachable only by boat, and a private charter runs a regular ferry from Garris Landing.3 The refuge's visitor guide to the island lists hiking, photography, wildlife observation and picnicking among its activities.4 The same guide also mentions a much shorter tower, 16 feet high, roughly 2.25 miles from the public dock.4 I could not confirm whether the public may climb the 110-foot tower, so ask the refuge before going.
