Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Liberty Hill Lookout is a 100-foot Aermotor LS-40 tower on the Sumter National Forest in Edgefield County, South Carolina, near McCormick.1,2 The National Historic Lookout Register gives 1940 as its build year and says it was constructed in the 1940s, with a 7-by-7-foot galvanized sheet metal cab under a hip roof.1 The Forest Service used it until 1989.1
The Register places the tower among the Forest Service's early fixed-point fire lookouts.1 The Register says the buildings around the tower housed the dispatch office for the Edgefield and Long Cane districts. During extreme fire days, those buildings also stored fire equipment and served as a staging area.1
Two items quoted on the Forest Lookouts page describe the people who ran it.2 Joe Price was a Civilian Conservation Corps member and a retired forestry technician.2 His 1992 obituary says he was a dispatcher and lookout at the tower for 35 years.2 A May 1972 Index-Journal item, also quoted there, says he and his wife, Trula Price, manned the tower at their home: he for 30 years and she for 25.2 The two figures disagree, and neither gives a start date. Trula Price had begun keeping rainfall records for the Weather Service in January 1952, and in 1972 the National Weather Service gave her a pin for 20 years of that work.2
A visit report on the Register's page, dated September 16, 2020, found the tower in good structural condition with little sign of rust. It marked the lookout as not staffed.1 The base is fenced off, the stairs cannot be reached, and the fence is posted no trespassing.1
A hiking guide says the upper deck is not open and that there is no tower access. It lists the site as a roadside stop of 0.1 miles round trip.3 Stay outside the fence; the tower is not open for climbing.1,3
