Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Anthony Hill Lookout Tower stands in Giles County, Tennessee, and is administered by the Tennessee Division of Forestry.1 A Forest Lookouts history page places it in the Division's District 7.2 The National Historic Lookout Register gives its built year as 1958 and describes it as a 93-foot Aermotor LS-40 tower.1
Aermotor was a company that built galvanized steel towers, and it produced several lookout models, including the LS-40.3 A 2019 industry history article says the LS-40 model included an inside stairway.3 The Register does not say whether this tower has one.1
The 1958 date fits a wider pattern. A state study of the Division's towers says most of them were built from the late 1940s to about 1960, though the text we read does not discuss this tower in particular.4
The study's table lists the tower among the extant Tennessee fire towers as of March 26, 2014.4 A Tennessee Landforms table marks it as standing and gives its elevation as 1,020 feet, while the Register gives 1,026 feet (313 meters).5,1 The Register also cites a site visit on November 26, 2022, but the page we read gives no findings from it.1 The tower was registered on August 9, 2023, on the nomination of Jason Johns.1
Today the sources we read do not say whether the tower is staffed, used for fire watch, or open to visitors, and our record lists its access as unknown. Please check with the Tennessee Division of Forestry before any visit,1 and do not climb the tower.
