Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Dyersburg Lookout Tower is listed in Dyer County, Tennessee, at about 497 feet above sea level.1 The National Historic Lookout Register describes it as an Aermotor-style tower with no obvious access points, and it names the Tennessee Division of Forestry as the agency that administers it.1

The register gives no build date.1 I did not find a source that names a builder or explains why the tower went up. I also found no record of who staffed it or of any fire connected with it.

The register entry was made on January 1, 2023, with Jason Johns as nominator, but it does not state whether the tower was standing at that time.1 The only source I found that speaks to current status is TNLandForms.us, an independent lookout site. It marks the Dyersburg tower as removed.2 That list was revised on January 8, 2026, which is more recent than the register entry.2 I could not find a newer record that confirms the tower's present state, so that state remains unclear.

The register describes no obvious way in.1 Anyone curious about the site should check with the Division of Forestry before going, and should not try to reach a structure that may no longer exist.
