Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Pine Mills Fire Tower stands in Wood County, Texas, in the small community of Pine Mills.1,2 The community sits about ten miles southeast of Quitman, where three farm roads meet.2
The earliest date in the Handbook of Texas entry is 1850, when a sawmill community called Liberty Hill stood a short way southeast of the later town.2 By about 1905 the nearby timber was used up and the mills had left.2
The National Historic Lookout Register gives the tower's design only as a belief: a 70-foot tower with a 7-by-7-foot Aermotor cab.1 The Register says the cab now holds a radio repeater for the "Texas A&M Fire Service."1
The Register recorded the tower on January 7, 2014, as US 986, TX 3, and names the Texas A&M Forest Service as its administrator.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as standing.3
The available records do not give a build date, a builder, or a list of lookouts who worked here, so the tower's early years are a gap.1,2,3
No source says whether the public can visit or climb it.1 Before going, check with the Texas A&M Forest Service, and do not climb a tower you have no permission to enter.
