View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Brushy Mountain lookout site sits in Alleghany County, Virginia, on land in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.1 Its registry numbers are US 923 and VA 9, and the site stands at 3,015 feet (919 m).1
The U.S. Forest Service built the tower in 1939.1 It was a CT-2 model, 40 feet high and built of wood, with a 14-by-14-foot cab, a catwalk and a shingled roof.1
According to the register, the tower came down before 2011.1 The site was added to the register on April 10, 2011, with Ron Stafford as nominator.1 A second listing of Virginia lookouts still marks the tower as gone.2
No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today or whether the public can reach it.
