Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The register puts the Bull Mountain site at 3,193 feet (973 meters) in Patrick County, Virginia.1 The site's first tower, made of wood, went up in 1943 for the Virginia Forest Service.1,2

A 60-foot Aermotor tower with a 7-by-7-foot metal cab took its place in 1949.1,3 The site also gained a one-room residence cabin at ground level in 1950.1

In 1989, when it was an emergency lookout, the site was dedicated to Governor Gerald L. Baliles. He grew up nearby and visited the tower often as a boy.1,2

The sources I read say nothing about who staffed the tower or which fires it watched.

The tower still stands, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as standing.4 The register names the Virginia Department of Forestry as its administrator.1,3

Public access is the open question. The register says nothing about visiting, and I found no current guidance on whether people can reach or enter the tower. A 1964 survey note describes going up to the top through a pipe gate on the fire road, but it does not say whether that gate is open today.3 Ask the Virginia Department of Forestry before you go, and do not climb the tower without permission.
