View from the cab

What you see from the cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Haycock Mountain Lookout stands in Floyd County, Virginia, and the Register lists its owner as a private party rather than a public agency.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association also files it under the name Haycock Knob (Pocket Ridge).2

The Register describes an 80-foot Aermotor tower built in the 1940s.1 Its standout feature is the watchman's cabin, which the Register says still stands whole.1 Few other Virginia towers, the Register notes, keep their cabin this complete.1

The sources I read record no staffing, named fires or other history for the tower.1,2,3

The Association lists the tower as standing.2 The Register registered it on January 23, 2017, as US 1166 and VA 32.1 A Forest Lookouts index of Virginia towers also lists a Haycock Mountain in Floyd County.3

The Register does not list the tower's coordinates, because the owner asked it not to, so this story omits them.1 No source describes public access or a rental.1,2,3 Because the land is privately owned, do not climb the tower or walk onto the property without the owner's permission.1
