View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

In October 1933 The Times Dispatch reported that Brunswick County had agreed to share the cost of a lookout with a neighboring county 1. The spot chosen was the highest point between Lawrenceville and Norfolk, and a district fire warden said about 60 percent of recent fires in the area had happened within view of the proposed tower 1.

According to the National Historic Lookout Register, the tower went up in 1933 2. It was made of galvanized steel by the Aermotor Co. and is listed as about 100 feet tall 2. When the register listed it in December 1996, the tower was still in use during spells of high fire danger, to aid spotting from the air 2. The register names the Virginia Department of Forestry as its administrator 2.

The 1996 register and the current state list describe different times: the register says the tower was operating in 1996, while the state list now marks the site as gone 2,3. No source describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, and I could not find whether the public can visit it.
