Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Red Oak Mountain Lookout, also called Red Oak Knob, is a cupola-style lookout near Laurel Mills in Rappahannock County, Virginia.1 The register dates it to the 1930s and says it is the only cupola-style lookout in Virginia.1 The state index lists its type as Ground.2
The sources we read do not say who built it, or give a build year more exact than the 1930s.1
During fire season, the register says, a lookout walked from near Laurel Mills up to Red Oak Knob each day to look out for wildfires.1 We found no names, years or specific fires tied to that work.1
The register added the lookout on June 9, 2015, on the nomination of Krissy Reynolds. It gives the elevation as 1,399 feet (426 meters).1
The state index lists the lookout as standing.2 The register names a private owner and describes no visiting arrangement.1 A March 2020 blog post describes a visit to Red Oak Mountain, but it does not say how the writer got permission or which route was used.3 Until the owner says otherwise, treat the site as private.1
