View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Boundary Butte is a high point about four miles south of Leavenworth, in Chelan County and the Wenatchee National Forest, at 3,168 feet.1,2

A 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab was built here in 1937.1,2,3

Firelookout.com lists four lookouts by name: Bobby Harnden in 1957, Gary Kester in 1963, Lynn Watson in 1964, and Larry Standish in 1965.2 We found no fire reports for this tower in the sources we read.

The Forest Lookouts page lists panorama photos taken on September 14, 1934, three years before the 1937 build year.4,1 None of the sources we read explains the earlier date.

The tower was removed in 1967.1,2,4,3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Washington list still shows the site as a tower that is gone.5

WillhiteWeb calls the summit a drive-up highpoint. Its undated photo captions show a cell tower and parking at the top.3 The page does not say whether any part of the 1937 lookout survives, and we found no source that describes footings or other remains.3

WillhiteWeb says ordinary cars can reach a point a quarter mile from the top on gravel and dirt, though it advises high clearance for the last stretch.3 Walking FR 400 from Boundary Pass is about 2 miles, with a 600-foot gain.3 We found no closure or permit rule for the road in the sources we read.
