Access

Access unknown

We do not know the access rules. Check with the land manager before you go. Willhite Web gives high-clearance 4WD routes to the summit and an alternate if the Benton Creek road is closed; no source states a public access rule

Road to the top?
Yes, you can drive up
Trail
Willhite Web says both routes require high clearance 4WD; if the roads are no longer open, it suggests the Rock Creek Road to the ridge

View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Cleman Mountain Lookout stood on a long ridge near the town of Naches, in Yakima County, Washington.1,2,3 The site was first developed in 1946 with a log cabin, set up by the Division of Forestry after the war.1,3 An L-4 cab replaced the cabin in 1954.2

A 40-foot wooden tower with a live-in DNR cab came later. The National Historic Lookout Register and firelookout.com date it to 1968, while Willhite Web says late 1968 or 1969.1,2,4,3 The cab was 14 by 14 feet.1

Willhite Web names Sharon Borgford and her husband as the lookouts in 1967, and Earl and Merline Blum in 1968.3 The Wenatchee National Forest last staffed the lookout in 1998.1,4,3

A storm in the winter of 2006 and 2007 damaged the tower legs.1,2 The sources differ on how many were hurt: the Former Fire Lookout Sites Register and firelookout.com say one leg broke, while Willhite Web says two were severely damaged.1,2,4,3 Willhite Web says the DNR toppled the tower in April 2007, and the National Historic Lookout Register says it was destroyed that year.3,1

The National Historic Lookout Register registered the site on November 8, 2000.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites Register added it on April 15, 2020.2 The two registers also give different coordinates and elevations, 5,088 feet (1,551 m) in one and 5,115 feet (1,559 m) in the other.1,2

We found no source that says what remains of the lookout today. Willhite Web includes a photo captioned "Towers on the summit," but gives no date and does not say whether any part of the lookout is among them.3 The guide says both routes to the summit need high-clearance four-wheel drive. If those roads are no longer open, it suggests the Rock Creek Road to the ridge instead.3 We found no information about whether the site is open to the public.
