View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Finney Peak got an L-4 cab in 1933, according to both the register and a Willhite page.1,2 In late August 1935, panoramic photos were taken from the roof.1,2 The register credits them to the National Archives' Pacific Northwest Region and dates them 29 August, while Willhite captions one as 28 August.1,2

A 1950 USGS visit called the lookout house a standard building, 14 feet square and painted white.2 Willhite's page names Rodger Harding as the lookout in 1953 and links to an interview with him.2 The cab was abandoned in 1965.1,2 A USGS helicopter visit in 1983 found the lookout house destroyed.2 The register says only that the lookout is gone.1

Today the approach is harder than it once was. Willhite writes that the trail stayed in guidebooks for years and then dropped out, that alder trees choke the road for well over a mile, and that a road washout has pushed the access further back.2 His route figures are 4.5 miles one way and 2,500 feet of climb.2 The header on the same page lists "Good gravel roads," which does not match the text.2 The summit has survey benchmarks, but no source here describes what, if anything, remains of the lookout, and none says whether the public may use the road.2,1
