View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Fourth of July Peak lies in Pend Oreille County, Washington, on the Colville National Forest, about 14 miles southeast of Ione. The register gives its elevation as 4,721 feet, or 1,439 meters.1,2
The site first had a crow's nest, built in 1933.1,2,3 In 1936 a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab was built, and the register says it replaced the crow's nest.1,2,3 A 1957 map shows the lookout under the name LeClerc Lookout.3
Willard Enyeart was the lookout in 1936.3 He had worked for the Forest Service in the district before, and he came from his home in Metaline Falls to be stationed at LeClerc Creek.4,3 Newport Miner items from that July place him at the lookout. A July 9 item says he spent a day at home in Metaline Falls, and it notes that heavy rains had let some Sullivan Lake lookouts leave their posts over the Fourth.4
The register and firelookout.com both say the tower is now gone, but neither gives a date for its removal.1,2 Forest Lookouts lists the site as removed.4
The Willhite page says its author has not visited the site and gives no hiking distance for it.3 No source we read describes what remains on the summit today, or whether the public can reach it.
