View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

French Ridge sits in the Wenatchee National Forest in Chelan County, about 17 miles to the west of Leavenworth.1,2 The lookout was an L-5 cab built in 1934.1,3 The sources we read describe a cab, not a tower.1,2,3

In June 1934 the Leavenworth Echo reported that John Wade and Frank Nixon were packing the lookout house in that week.4,3 The paper also said snow in the high country reached as deep as 15 feet in some spots.4,3 Panoramic photos were made from the lookout's roof on August 13, 1934.4,3

A blog that posts Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest photos and notes says John (Johan) Olav Kjosness worked summers from 1934 through 1939, and that his lookout posts included French Ridge.5 Firelookout.com lists Ralph Walter as known lookout personnel in 1963.2

Removal came in the 1970s.1,2,3

Willhite's photo captions mention a foundation, remains and an anchor spike at the site, and one of his views from the site is captioned 2020.3 No source we read describes what stands there now beyond those captions.3

Willhite's directions begin in Leavenworth on Icicle Creek Road, run to the trailhead, then cover 2 miles on the Icicle Creek Trail and 4.4 miles on the French Ridge Trail to reach the site.3 He lists a hiking distance of 6.5 miles with 3,500 feet of gain.3 A 2003 trip report said hikers could overlook the side trail up to the site.6 The site is on Wenatchee National Forest land, and no source we read describes a closure or a permit.1,3
