View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Gee Point is a former lookout site on the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Skagit County, Washington, at about 4,974 feet (1,516 meters).1 The U.S. Forest Service administers the land.1

The lookout was an L-5 cab built in 1934.1,2,3 The National Historic Lookout Register says an L-5 is a 10-by-10-foot cab, part of a family of hip-roofed cabs that also includes the larger L-4.4

During the Second World War the site was an Aircraft Warning Service station, called Yoke 4-5.5,3 The station used existing forest facilities, and the Forest Service kept the site for fire detection afterward.5,3

The station was activated on April 6, 1942, and deactivated on October 16, 1943.5 The same page also gives October 16, 1944 for the inactivation, and Willhite's page gives 10/16/43, so the sources disagree on the end year.5,3

The cab was abandoned in 1964.1,2,3 The register says the lookout is gone, and the Washington lookouts index marks the site as removed.1,5

Willhite reports the remains of a cabin on the route to the summit. He thinks a cabin below the summit was likely built for the wartime station.3

The route starts at a large parking area at the end of a forest road and gains about 700 feet.3 Willhite's page asks visitors to call ahead, because forest thinning was being planned.3 Check with the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest before you go.
