View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Green Mountain rises about seven miles west of downtown Bremerton, inside the 6,000-acre Green Mountain State Forest on the Kitsap Peninsula.1 The Washington Division of Forestry and DNR administer the site.2

The summit was in use as a lookout by 1926, though its start date is unknown.3 A 50-foot wooden tower with ladder access and a tent for living quarters went up in 1928 or 1929; the sources differ on the year.2,4,3

In 1931 the tower was rebuilt to 97 feet.4,3 A forestry association report said the extra height brought far more territory under observation, and that the major number of fires in the Kitsap and Mason County District were first spotted from there.4,3 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register instead says a 90-foot wooden tower replaced the first one in 1933.2

In 1942 an 84-foot treated timber tower with an L-4 cab went up.2,4,3 The Air Warning Service also used the site as a wartime station. Sources differ on whether it opened in March 1942 or 1943, but both put its closing in October 1943.4,3

WillhiteWeb lists lookouts by year, including Weston Niemela on duty in August 1942, Marie Thorinson in 1944, Bernice Selby in 1961 and 1962, and Kay Loertscher Hibler in 1968.3

In December 1962 the 84-foot tower was found collapsed.2,3 The register blames vandals who released its guy wires, and another index says vandals destroyed the tower.2,4 WillhiteWeb gives a different account: a scout troop had taken the guy lines, thinking the lookout was no longer in use.3 A 50-foot wooden DNR tower replaced it in 1963.2,4,3 The register says that tower was destroyed in 1971, while WillhiteWeb says it was removed or destroyed.2,3

Today a forest road open to motorized traffic reaches the summit, and established trails also climb to it.3,1 Wikipedia describes a picnic area there, with views toward Seattle, the Cascades and the Olympics.1 As of 2014 it listed a single microwave tower on the mountain. No source I found says whether any part of the lookout remains.1
