View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Griffin Peak is a former lookout site in the Umatilla National Forest, about 20 miles east of Walla Walla, in Columbia County, Washington.1,2

Panoramic photographs taken on August 19, 1935 were shot from a tower about 20 feet above the ground.3 The same photographs also capture the road into the site and a gate.3 The sources do not say whether that tower was the same one built later.3

In about 1938 a tower with an L-4 cab went up on the peak, according to the Kresek Inventory as cited by WillhiteWeb.3 A Washington lookouts listing gives the same circa-1938 date and calls it an L-4 tower.4

Sources agree that the tower was eventually abandoned and no longer stands.1,2,3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's register added the site on December 17, 2012.1

We found no source describing what, if anything, remains at the site today, and none says whether the public can visit it.1,2,4,3 The register lists the U.S. Forest Service as the administering agency.1
