View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Horton Butte lookout stood in the Wenatchee National Forest in Chelan County, about four miles northeast of Lucerne.1,2 The register and FireLookout.com both date its L-5 cab to 1934, and Willhite's site agrees.1,2,3 Willhite's site adds that panoramic photos were taken there on September 16, 1934, and that a shadow in them is probably the lookout under construction.3

In 1939, Austin Post served as an emergency lookout there.3 Willhite's site recounts a severe lightning storm that set fires across Chelan, after which the ranger asked Post to go up to the station.3

The register says the cab was removed in 1953.1 FireLookout.com and Willhite say it was destroyed that year.2,3 The sources agree on the year but not on how the cab left the site.

No source we read describes what remains at the site now, and none says whether the site is open to visitors. Willhite's page lists the hiking distance as not yet visited.3
