View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Huckleberry Mountain, in Pend Oreille County, carried a fire lookout on the Colville National Forest.1,2 A 1925 item from the White Bluffs Spokesman, quoted by Forest Lookouts, said a new lookout would be erected there that summer.3 The register dates the first pole tower to the 1930s, so the two accounts do not line up cleanly.3,1 In 1938 the lookout was issued two-way radio gear, and in May 1939 a newspaper item reported that lookouts were set up on the mountain that week.3,4
The first structure was a 20-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab. In 1964 a 20-foot treated timber tower with an R-6 cab replaced it.1,2,4
Firelookout.com lists four known lookout staff between 1955 and 1959.2 A 1976 visit report describes a seasonal technician who worked the lookout that summer and came down early because fire weather was scarce.1 WillhiteWeb says an earlier seasonal worker and his family found the post hard to live at.4
The lookout was taken away in 1979.1,2,3,4
WillhiteWeb's photo captions mention footings and stairs, but the page does not say when those photos were taken.4 The same page says the road is in fairly good shape nearly to the top, that a high-clearance SUV should have little trouble reaching the summit, and that the final few hundred feet are partly rocky.4 We found no source that says whether the summit is open to visitors today, so check with the Colville National Forest before going.2,4
