View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Huckleberry Mountain lookout stood in Skagit County, in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, about 14 miles east-northeast of Darrington.1,2 WillhiteWeb's page for this lookout, at 5,856 feet, calls it the Huckleberry Ridge site.3 It says an early drawing placed it on Huckleberry Mountain, which it considers probably a mapmaker's error.3 The cab was 10 by 10 feet and of the L-5 type, built in 1935.1,4,3 Panoramic photos were taken from its roof on September 7, 1935.4,3

Vandals burned the cab in 1962.1,2,3 Forest Lookouts says only that vandals burned it.4

WillhiteWeb's trip photos are undated.3 They show a cleared spot where the lookout building once stood, plus stove parts and phone-line insulators along the trail.3 The same account gives a hiking distance of 7 miles, starting at a trailhead roughly 15 miles along the Suiattle River Road.3 The first two miles are often grown over, and near the end hikers tend to lose the route.3 Volunteers clear the trail about every five years.3

We found no source that says whether the site or its trail is open to visitors today. Check with the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest before going.1,3
