View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Jolly Mountain sits in the Wenatchee National Forest in Kittitas County, about 14 miles north-northwest of Cle Elum.1,2 The site was established in 1916 as a fire camp, before any cabin was built.1,3 A cupola cabin followed in 1921, and an L-4 cab replaced it in 1936.1,3

Firelookout.com's list of known lookout personnel has one entry: Montague Easton, for 1933.2

Sources disagree on how the L-4 cab ended. The Former Fire Lookout Sites register says it was removed in 1968, while firelookout.com and Willhiteweb say it was destroyed that year.1,2,3 A third listing marks the site as removed.4

None of the sources describes a surviving lookout structure today. Willhiteweb describes Jolly Mountain as a former lookout site, and reports that signs on the trail show it is open to almost all types of users.3 The route starts on gravel road 4315, which runs 5.9 miles to a gate with roadside parking.3 From the gate, the final half mile is road walking to the trailhead, and the trail is about three miles one way.3
