View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Lookout Mountain rises to 5,475 feet in Lewis County, Washington, about 10 miles south of Mount Rainier.1,2 The register gives the tower's height as 10 feet and calls it a wooden L-4 tower, built in 1932.1,2

Sources disagree about the forest. The register and firelookout.com place the site in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, while an index on washingtonlookouts.weebly.com lists it under the Snoqualmie National Forest.1,2,3 The register names the U.S. Forest Service as the administering agency.1

The tower was gone by 1968. The register says it was removed that year, and firelookout.com says it was destroyed.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's regional list also marks the tower as gone.4

The sources say nothing about what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the site is open to visitors.1,2,3,4
