View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Maloney Ridge lookout stood in King County, Washington, about a mile south of Skykomish, at roughly 3,364 feet.1,2 Its L-4 cab came from Galena Mountain, where it was built in 1931.3 In 1941 the cab was taken apart, carried up to this ridge and reassembled.4

WillhiteWeb dates the move to 1950 instead, and says the site was established that year when the Galena cab arrived.5

During World War II the Aircraft Warning Service manned the station.4,1 An AWS cabin replaced the L-4 cab in 1942,1,2 and another L-4 cab went up in 1953.1,2

The cab was removed in 1969.1 Forest Lookouts says it was removed by burning, while Firelookout.com and WillhiteWeb call it destroyed.4,2,5

A WillhiteWeb visit found the rocky perch and the foundations of the lookout still on the site.5 Communication towers also stand on the ridge, and the same account says they draw visitors' attention away from exploring the area.5 The account also says the lookout stood nearer what is now called Sobieski Mountain, and that its spot sits some distance from where the map places the Maloney Ridge name.5

The road is good gravel, but a winter gate closes it; WillhiteWeb's gate note is dated November 7, 2014.5
