View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Mount Annie is in Okanogan County, Washington, within the Okanogan National Forest.1,2 A road was under construction up the mountain in 1933, and a lookout tower went up that year with a log cabin at its base.1,3,4 A newspaper said in October 1933 that the tower was being framed to be raised.4

In 1934 Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wills of Tonasket staffed the tower for its first summer.3,4

Sources disagree on the height. The register and firelookout.com give 65 feet, while Willhite gives 60 feet, the same figure a 1933 newspaper planned.1,2,3,4

In 1956 rot was found in one tower leg, which was hollow.3 The tower came down in 1957.3 The register says it was removed and never replaced, while firelookout.com and Willhite say it was destroyed.1,2,3

The site has no views today, because the forest has grown up.3 Willhite's account of a 2020 visit includes photos of a building foundation, footings and woodpiles.3

The road leaves Highway 20 and is signed.3 Willhite reports two gates about six miles from the highway. He says the left gate road is usually locked, though the road was open during a recent timber sale.3 Beyond the gate he describes good gravel to another gate two miles below the summit, then fallen trees across the road.3 The land is National Forest, administered by the U.S. Forest Service, and no source states visiting rules for today.1
