View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Muckamuck Mountain sits in the Okanogan National Forest, in Okanogan County, Washington.1,2 The register lists the summit at 6,370 feet.1

The lookout was a D-6 cupola cabin built in 1922.1,2,3 A 1922 entry, quoted on the Forest Lookouts site, says a standard house was built on the mountain that October.4

Bert Julian was the lookout in 1924, according to Willhite.3 A 1924 item quoted by Forest Lookouts says Julian picked up wireless messages on his radio set, with a reach from Annapolis to Cavite, P.I.4 FireLookout.com lists Julian for 1923 and 1929, and Robert McIntosh for 1959.2 Those 1923 and 1929 dates do not match the 1924 date in Willhite and the 1924 item.2,3,4 Willhite also says panoramic images were taken from the cupola in 1930.3

The cab was destroyed in 1974 after 52 years, according to Willhite and FireLookout.com.3,2 The register says it was removed that year, and it notes that a snow-measuring pole still stood on the site in September 2001.1

Willhite visited in May 2020 and found little left but wire and nails.3 He reports that much of the timber has regrown, views are still available by moving around the summit area, and cattle wander the mountain along informal tracks.3

His route went up Forest Service Road 3825 for 6 miles to a trail that is not signed, then 1.6 miles one way to the summit, with about 1,200 feet of gain.3 The sources read mention no closure or permit for that route.
