View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Nannie Peak Lookout Site sits on Nannie Ridge in Lewis County, Washington, inside the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.1,2 The U.S. Forest Service administers the land.1 Willhite's trip guide gives the lookout's elevation as 6,106 feet.2
The site had an L-4 cab, which the register and firelookout.com both date to 1934.1,3 Willhite places the work in 1933 and 1934, and says the crew was snowed in during construction.2 Willhite also reports panoramic photos from 1936, taken 16 feet above the ground.2
Willhite writes that the lookout was abandoned in the 1940s.2 The cab, he reports, met its end in the 1960s, either removed or burned.2 The register says the cab was no longer standing by the 1960s,1 and the Forest Lookouts listing marks the site as removed.4
No source we read describes a standing structure at the site today. A photo on Willhite's page is captioned as the lookout location with foundations.2 A 2017 hiker reported a box's worth of rusty nails spilled at the old lookout, so watch your step.5
The site is reached on foot, up Nannie Ridge Trail 98 from the Walupt Lake area.2,5 The climb covers about 3 miles and roughly 2,100 feet.2,5 Willhite says the old lookout trail turns off to the left at the ridge crossing.2 The sources we read describe no closure of the trail. The register recorded the site on July 16, 2012, as US 1334, WA 234.1
