View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Newaukum Lookout stood on an unnamed summit high above Newaukum Lake, in Lewis County, Washington.1,2 Three sources place it in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.1,3,2 Washington Lookouts instead lists the Snoqualmie National Forest.4
The cab was built in 1934 as an L-4 cab.1,3 FireLookout's page calls it a cabin.3 Panorama photographs were taken on July 30, 1934.4 The Former Fire Lookout Sites photo captions credit the 1934 panoramas to the National Archives, Pacific Northwest Region.1 FireLookout gives the elevation as 3,244 feet, while WillhiteWeb gives 3,791 feet and adds a note of "3,760+ today" without explaining it.3,2
Sources disagree on how the cab ended. The Former Fire Lookout Sites says it was removed in the 1960s, and FireLookout says it was destroyed then.1,3 WillhiteWeb repeats earlier researchers' record of destruction in the 1960s.2 Washington Lookouts gives only the word "Removed".4 The same register lists the site as US 1288 and registered it on June 18, 2012.1
WillhiteWeb says a road still reaches the summit, rough and overgrown in places.2 The page lists the approach as gravel roads, with a rough last half mile.2 Spokane's Fire Lookout Museum holds a sign that came from the lookout.2 No source we read describes any remains of the cab itself, and none says whether the site is open to the public.
