View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

No Name Peak Lookout stood in Pend Oreille County, Washington, about 10 miles north-northwest of Newport.1,2 The site lies within the Kaniksu and Colville National Forests, and the U.S. Forest Service administered it.1,2

The tower went up in 1935 as a 40-foot pole with an L-4 cab.1,3 A WillhiteWeb photo is captioned "No Name Peak Lookout in 1940".3 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register lists it as US 1516 and registered it on December 17, 2012.1

Sources disagree on how the tower ended. The Former Fire Lookout Sites says it was removed in 1955, and FireLookout and WillhiteWeb say it was destroyed that year.1,2,3 Washington Lookouts gives only the word "Removed", with no date.4

WillhiteWeb's trip report describes a route from Mystic Lake, along an old road that is overgrowing, then up a ridge.3 The same report warns that a hiker who strays into a home site's backyard has gone too far and might be shot.3 The hike is 1.8 miles one way, with about 1,200 feet of climb.3 Its site notes list footings, anchors, cable and glass, and say there were no views at the summit in 2023.3 The same page lists access as "Any vehicle", which does not fit the hike it describes.3 None of the sources says whether the site is open to the public.
