View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Owl Mountain, in Jefferson County about 20 miles north of Lake Quinault, held a two-story modified cupola cabin.1,2 The register lists it as administered by the Washington Division of Forestry/DNR, and Kemnow's index places it under the Washington Department of Natural Resources.1,3 The register and firelookout.com both date the cabin to 1941.1,2

The date is complicated by a 1944 report. Kemnow's page quotes that May 1944 report on Air Warning Service stations. It says a station called "Baker 6-6" was activated on August 22, 1942, used existing state-owned facilities, and added a shake cabin built of native material.3 Willhite's list also gives 1941 for Owl Mountain, while noting that the author drops sites that were used only as Aircraft Warning Stations in WWII.4 The sources do not say whether the 1941 cabin and the 1942 station were the same structure, so the timeline is unsettled.1,3

Every source I read says the cabin is now gone.1,2,5 When the Air Warning Service finished with the site, the state kept it.3

The only description of the setting I found is from the 1944 report, which put the station 14 miles from a road.3 No source describes what, if anything, remains on the site now, or whether the public can reach it.
