View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Pass Creek Ridge sits in the Colville National Forest, about ten miles east of Metaline Falls in Pend Oreille County.1,2 The sources give its elevation as about 6,054 feet.1,2,3 The U.S. Forest Service administers the site.1

Built in 1934, the tower here was a 40-foot pole structure with an L-4 cab.1,2,3

The tower came down in the 1950s, but the sources differ on how. The register says it was removed, Firelookout.com says it was destroyed, and WillhiteWeb says removed or destroyed.1,2,3

No source we read describes what, if anything, is left at the site.1,2,3 WillhiteWeb's page says its author had not yet visited the site.3 A 1967 USGS map, updated in 1971, marks a trail ending at the lookout point, according to WillhiteWeb.3

The register added the site on December 17, 2012, with Ray Kresek as nominator.1
