View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Pyramid Mountain lookout stood on a peak in the Wenatchee National Forest, in Chelan County, Washington, at about 8,245 feet, or 2,513 meters.1 Firelookout.com places it roughly 31 miles northwest of Chelan.2

The first lookout on the summit was a cupola cabin, built in 1917.1,2 In 1930 a gabled L-4 cab took its place.1,2 An August 1930 Wenatchee newspaper item, quoted on the Washington Lookouts page, said the new station would be placed at the peak's highest point, and that roughly five tons of material would reach the summit by pack horse.3

One lookout worker appears in the sources. A July 1937 item said David Hale would work at Pyramid Peak for the Forest Service that summer. A September 1937 item about a horseback trip to the station called him the lookout man.3

The sources disagree about how the cab ended. The register says it was removed in 1954, while firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.1,2 The Washington Lookouts page simply marks the site as removed.3 We could not settle which account is right.

The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list records the site as a ground site that is now gone.4 None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today, or whether the site is open to visitors. Because it lies in a national forest, anyone interested should check with the Wenatchee National Forest before going up.1
