View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Red Mountain is a former lookout site in Kittitas County, Washington, in the Wenatchee National Forest.1 It sits at 5,703 feet, about 17 miles northwest of Cle Elum.1,2

The register says the lookout was built in 1932 with an L-5 cab.1 The other source calls it an L-6 cab, so the two disagree on the model.1,2 Both say the cab was abandoned in 1948.1,2

Panoramic views labeled as Red Mountain Lookout and dated August 22, 1934 are credited to the National Archives Pacific Northwest Region.1 The register listed the site on October 28, 2012, on the nomination of Ray Kresek.1

The register says the cab is now gone.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Washington index also lists the site as gone.3

The register page includes a photo captioned "Debris."1 No source we read describes the site today or whether visitors can reach it.1,2
