Gone: The lookout no longer stands. Only the site is left. Destroyed in 1986 (the Weebly page says toppled). Willhite photo captions mention footings and a benchmark; none of those captions is dated.

View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Saddle Mountain sits in Pend Oreille County, about four miles northwest of Newport. The Washington Department of Natural Resources administers the site.1,2
Radio came first. A short-wave radio went in at the lookout site in June 1944, but the Willhite page does not identify the structure that stood there then.3 A 1944 newspaper item, quoted on a Washington lookouts site, lists the mountain among the stations linked by the new radio sets.4 Charles Heppe, a veteran firefighter, was the lookout that year.3
A 30-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab went up in 1945.1,2,3 A Spokane newspaper reported that August that the new lookout was complete, with Heppe in charge.4
Staffing went on into the 1960s.2,3 FireLookout.com lists Laura Belle Johnson for 1957 to 1962, and the Willhite page names Sharon Borgford as the lookout in 1965.2,3
In 1962 the Department replaced the first tower with a 40-foot wooden cab.1,2,3,4 Its own carpentry crew built it for about $8,000.3
The tower was destroyed in 1986.2,3 The Weebly page says it was toppled that year.4 The register's photo caption shows the final moments of the lookout.1
Captions on the Willhite photos mention footings and a benchmark, but none of those captions gives a date.3
The state agency holds the summit itself, but the old access road is on private land.3 The Willhite page gives a hike of 1.3 miles with 800 feet of climbing.3 Visitors should check with the landowner first.
