View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The South Creek Butte lookout had an L-5 cab built in 1934.1,2 The site is in Okanogan County, Washington.1 It stood in the Okanogan National Forest, about 23 miles west-northwest of Twisp, at 7,670 feet, or 2,338 metres.1,3 Willhite's site has photographs captioned 1934 looking southwest, southeast and north, plus one captioned 1946.2

The Former Fire Lookout Sites register listed the site on November 19, 2012, on the nomination of Ray Kresek, under the number US 1467, WA 367.1

Abandonment came in 1952, six years after the 1946 photograph.1,2 Firelookout reports that the cab is no longer there.3

The register lists the U.S. Forest Service as administrator.1 Willhite's page says more will be added after a visit.2 No source describes what remains at the site today, and none says whether the public may visit.
