View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
South Fork Mountain is a former lookout site on the Kaniksu National Forest in Pend Oreille County, Washington, at 4,203 feet.1 The U.S. Forest Service administers the land.1 A 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab went up there in 1935.1,2
The tower had a short working life.1,2 The tower and its cab were given up in 1936, a year after construction.1,2 WillhiteWeb counts five other lookout sites within four miles, and places Orwig just 2.3 miles to the north.2
A Washington lookout index lists the site as removed.3 Another listing simply calls the lookout gone.4 The Former Fire Lookout Sites entry says the lookout has come down.1 The register added the site on April 20, 2020.1
The sources we read do not describe what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether visitors may go there.1,4,2,3
